Our goal is to deliver targeted enhancements to Veterans Park that will improve the experience of everyone in our community.  Read below to learn about our proposed project scope and focus.

areas of opportunity

The boundaries of the proposed updates to Veterans Park.

Recreation and Gathering Spaces

  • Playgrounds and Sports Areas: Design flexible recreational zones, including spaces for traditional sports, outdoor gyms, adventure playgrounds, or natural play areas.
  • Gathering Spaces: Provide multi-functional open spaces for events, picnics, or performances, ensuring areas for both large crowds and intimate gatherings.
  • Water Features: Incorporate ponds, fountains, or streams that encourage interaction with nature and provide cooling effects during hot weather.

Circulation and Connectivity

  • Paths and Trails: Design walking, cycling, and multi-use paths that connect different areas of the park while integrating with nearby neighborhoods and public transport.
  • Wayfinding: Incorporate clear signage and maps to guide visitors through the space, highlighting key features and walking times between areas.
  • Flow and Focal Points: Create a smooth flow through the park with key focal points (water features, sculptures, gardens) that encourage exploration.

Art and Culture Integration

  • Public Art: Include interactive art installations or sculptures to enhance the aesthetic and cultural value of the park.
  • Educational Signage: Install interpretive signs or exhibits about local history, ecology, and sustainability efforts.
  • Community Engagement: Incorporate spaces for community-driven events, like farmers markets, cultural festivals, or pop-up art exhibitions.

Accessibility

  • Universal Design: Ensure that paths, entrances, and amenities are accessible to people of all abilities, including smooth transitions, gentle ramps, and ADA-compliant facilities.
  • Accessible Space Distribution: Plan a balance of active and passive spaces to cater to a diverse group of visitors (families, individuals, elderly, etc.), including open play areas, quiet zones, and spaces for community gatherings.
  • Cultural Inclusivity: Incorporate designs and elements that reflect the community’s diverse cultural heritage, including art installations, signage, or event spaces.

Ecological Restoration

  • Native Plantings: Reintroduce or enhance native flora to promote biodiversity, reduce maintenance, and create natural habitats for wildlife.
  • Stormwater Management: Implement bioswales, rain gardens, permeable paving, and natural drainage systems to manage water runoff sustainably.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Include gardens that attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds to strengthen the local ecosystem.

Sustainability

  •  Low-Maintenance Landscaping: Utilize xeriscaping or other methods to minimize water use and reduce maintenance needs.
  • Materials Reuse: Use reclaimed or recycled materials for pathways, benches, and structures.

Maintenance and Longevity

  • Maintenance Infrastructure: Consider irrigation systems, composting areas, or storage for tools to support ongoing care.
  • Longevity of Materials: Choose durable, weather-resistant materials for benches, play equipment, and structures to reduce the need for frequent replacements.
